ANCA Dickson: Gallery, Studios, Administration

ANCA Dickson is a not-for-profit, artist-run organisation combining a public gallery with affordable studio facilities for Canberra’s visual arts community. Its Dickson campus includes ANCA Gallery, the organisation’s office and artist studios, while a second campus operates in Mitchell. The gallery provides a place for local and visiting artists to present work and for audiences to engage with contemporary art in a working arts environment.

The listed exhibition, Everyday. Reverence, brings together seven artists whose practices consider care, connection, meditation and the meaning found in everyday life. The exhibition includes tactile works made from materials such as textiles, paper, beads and found objects, with artists reworking familiar materials into new forms. The participating artists are described as carers and makers who use slow, considered processes to explore stories, histories, cultures and the human need for steadiness during uncertain times.

ANCA Gallery has a thoughtful, process-focused atmosphere rather than the feel of a conventional commercial venue. Visitors can see how the organisation supports artists at different stages, from studio practice through to public exhibition. ANCA was established in 1989 and has grown into the ACT’s largest affordable studio organisation, with a mission centred on sustaining creative work and connecting Canberra artists with broader audiences. Its artist-run structure is supported by a board that includes current studio artists.

The gallery is a good fit for solo visitors who enjoy taking time with exhibitions, as well as friends or small groups looking for a cultural stop in Canberra. Entry is free, and exhibitions are generally open from Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, excluding public holidays, with additional access for openings, events and public programs. The office can be visited by appointment, while the studios are reserved for tenants, appointments and special events.
