Australian National University Classics Museum

The Australian National University Classics Museum offers a focused look at the cultural practices of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Its collection includes more than 600 objects, with ancient art and everyday items from Greece and the Roman world, as well as Egypt, the Near East and other parts of the Mediterranean.

The museum’s particular strengths include domestic objects, writing and commemoration, southern Italian pottery and drama. Together, these areas give visitors insight into both artistic traditions and the details of daily life in the ancient world. The collection has grown since the museum was established in 1962, supported by ANU, University House, the Friends of the Classics Museum and loans from institutions including the National Gallery of Australia and the Parliament House Art Collection.

Located on the ground floor of the A.D. Hope Building on the ANU campus in Braddon, Canberra, the museum is open to the general public on weekdays from 9am to 4pm, excluding public holidays. It was founded as a teaching resource and remains useful for students of Classics and Ancient History, Art History, Archaeology and art. Guided tours are available for schools and groups, making it particularly suitable for educational visits and organised outings. Solo visitors and anyone interested in ancient history can also explore the public collection at their own pace.
