Blundells Cottage

Blundells Cottage offers a close look at Canberra’s early rural and residential history through a small stone house built around the 1860s. Now managed as a house museum, it is described as the only pre-Federal Capital building in the National Triangle. The cottage was constructed using stone from Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain, and its setting interprets the surrounding landscape as an agricultural smallholding, with gardens, an orchard, planting beds, fencing and other features linked to its former use.

The cottage’s story is shaped by the families who lived there over a century. William Ginn, Duntroon’s head ploughman, was the first resident, followed by bullock driver George Blundell and his family, who occupied the house for about 60 years. The final residents were shepherd Harry Oldfield and his wife, Alice, who supplied produce to public servants, residents and boarders. The site also reflects the changing character of early Canberra, when the cottage provided rental accommodation in a young capital with limited housing. The house was occupied from 1860 until 1961, before restoration and its conversion into a museum.

Visitors can explore the cottage’s heritage setting, including the interpreted vegetable patch, former potato field, historic track alignment and the footprint of an external kitchen and fireplace. Uneven surfaces, trip hazards and low structures are part of the heritage site, so care is needed while moving around the grounds. Five accessible car spaces and a wheelchair-accessible path provide access to the front of the cottage for a close view of its oldest sections, gardens and orchard, while the interior itself does not meet accessibility standards. Blundells Cottage is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, with free entry. It suits solo visitors, families and small groups interested in local history, heritage buildings and the people who helped shape Canberra. Education programs are also available, making the site relevant for school groups and structured learning visits. As an outdoor heritage property, it can close in extreme weather, so visitors should check current advice before travelling.
