Bushland Nature Walk

Bushland Nature Walk offers a quieter way to experience the Australian National Botanic Gardens, just minutes from central Canberra. Starting at the Visitor Centre, the return trail moves through the Gardens’ bushland precinct and the natural Black Mountain environment, with views towards Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament House.

This is a 3 km Grade 3 walk, taking about 1 hour and 20 minutes, so it suits visitors looking for a more challenging track rather than a flat garden stroll. The bushland reserve contains more than 650 plant species, including over 60 orchids, and the trail provides opportunities to see native birds, wildlife and rare plants. Interpretive signs add context, sharing stories about the plants and wildlife of Black Mountain as you go.

A viewing platform at the end of the track is the walk’s main lookout, opening across Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament House. The route is a return walk and is not wheelchair accessible. A map can be downloaded or collected from the Visitor Centre before setting out. With its natural setting, wildlife and broad city views, the walk is a good option for solo visitors, couples and small groups wanting an active bushland outing close to Civic, Canberra.
