Canberra Carousel is best understood as a piece of living local history rather than a conventional attraction. The 69-keyless fairground organ was built in 1911 and originally operated with the merry-go-round now located on City Walk in Civic. The organ and carousel were bought for the people of Canberra in 1973, giving the instrument a lasting place in the city’s story.
The organ has been carefully rebuilt and refurbished by volunteers from the Carousel Organ Restoration Group, with support from heritage grants. Restoration was completed in 2013, and the instrument was formally returned to the ACT Government the following year. Its history, distinctive sound and connection to Canberra make it an unusual feature for families, community groups and anyone interested in the city’s heritage.
The organ is available to hire for events around Canberra, with bookings requiring at least three weeks’ notice. Event organisers need suitable conditions, including a fairly flat, hard surface, access to power or a generator, room for the towing vehicle to manoeuvre and a barrier to protect the mechanisms. It cannot play in the rain and is reasonably loud, so nearby buildings and other activities should be considered. Volunteers are required to operate it on the day. People can also get involved directly by volunteering at performances and helping with general maintenance.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.7 from 43 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
