Why it's worth checking out
Cotter Dam Lookout offers a straightforward way to see one of Canberra’s major water-supply landmarks in its surrounding recreation area. The Cotter Dam Discovery Trail leads to a viewing area with direct views of the dam, while the Honyong-Cotter Track provides another perspective of the dam wall. The discovery trail is an easy 1 km return walk and is wheelchair-friendly.
The wider Cotter Avenue setting suits a relaxed outdoor visit, with picnic tables, shelter, toilets, electric barbecues, drinking water and a playground. Several walks begin nearby, including the easy, wheelchair- and pram-friendly Cotter Explorer Track along the Cotter River. The area also offers opportunities for walking, running, fishing and picnics, with autumn foliage adding seasonal colour beneath the avenue of European deciduous trees.
There is a strong local story here. The original Cotter Reservoir was Canberra’s only water supply for more than 40 years after its completion in 1915. The dam was enlarged between 2009 and 2013, and the site’s discovery trail shares stories about the region’s water history. It is a practical choice for families and groups, while the short trails and viewing platforms also work well for solo visitors. Parking is available, and the site is about 25 minutes west of Canberra’s city centre. Take care around the water: currents, submerged rocks, slippery surfaces and trip hazards are noted, and there is no lifeguard. Dogs, camping and fires are not permitted.
