Magna Carta Place

Magna Carta Place is a small commemorative park in Canberra centred on a monument exploring the history and continuing influence of Magna Carta. Created as a Centenary of Federation gift to Australia, it reflects the long political and cultural connections between Australia and Great Britain. The site is next to the Old Parliament House Senate Garden, in the national capital’s historic parliamentary precinct.

The monument is designed like an ancient English burial mound opened to reveal a document within. At its centre, a pavilion with a copper dome contains a time capsule placed in 2001 and intended to be opened in 2101. Latin words from chapter 29 of the 1297 version of Magna Carta are cut into the dome, while an English translation appears on a rubbing plaque inside. Bronze text panels around the structure can also be used for brass rubbing, adding an interactive element to the visit.

Two long etched marble walls tell the story from different perspectives. One traces the circumstances and development of Magna Carta in England; the other follows the growth of the rule of law and parliamentary government in Australia. The structure uses bluestone, granite, bronze and ironbark, with layered surfaces intended to suggest geology and the passage of time. Its curved layout encourages visitors to move through the space gradually, taking in the murals, inscriptions and pavilion rather than viewing the monument from a single point.

The project began with Canberra residents who wanted a Federation commemoration that acknowledged Australia’s relationship with Britain. The winning design came from Australian architect Alastair Falconer, working with exhibition designer Marcus Bree and artists Silvia Velez and Chris Meadham. Magna Carta Place suits solo visitors, history-minded travellers, school or community groups, and anyone exploring Canberra’s parliamentary landmarks. It offers a compact outdoor stop with plenty to read and consider, linking the 1215 charter and its later versions with ideas of freedom, trial by jury, justice and accountable government in Australia.
