Why it's worth checking out

Pialligo Redwood Forest offers a quiet, distinctly Canberra outdoor experience among a grove of mature redwoods associated with Walter Burley Griffin’s vision for the city. Visitors can follow a self-guided walking track of about three kilometres, or simply settle in for a picnic beneath the trees.

The forest also has an unusual history. The redwoods were planted despite advice from Canberra arborist Thomas Charles Weston, and only around 3,000 of the original 122,000 trees survived. Today, the site is recognised as Australia’s largest stand of mature redwood species and is listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List.

It suits visitors looking for an easy-going walk, a picnic setting or a short nature stop close to Canberra. Dogs are allowed on leads, and there is a car park. To protect the trees’ shallow root systems, bicycles and vehicles are not permitted within the forest. The venue does not cater for people with access needs, so visitors should consider this before planning a visit.

Spot Score

51

The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.0 from 80 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
