Rose Cottage is a pub in Gilmore, Tuggeranong, where a long local history sits alongside hearty pub food, drinks, function spaces and live entertainment. The venue is based at a historic estate established in the 1870s, making it one of Canberra’s older hospitality venues. Its food offering is designed to suit a broad crowd, with a changing menu of familiar pub favourites, specials, pizzas and meals for children. The website also lists dedicated options including a Thursday schnitzel special, à la carte pizza, platters and a snack menu.
The setting is a major part of the experience. Rose Cottage’s original buildings include two early cottages constructed using traditional rammed-earth techniques. The smaller cottage now houses the café, while the later cottage is known as Mary’s Bar. The site also includes an enclosed glass room with a large indoor open fireplace, along with landscaped grounds, heritage roses and several remaining Kurrajong trees. Outdoor areas are used as a beer garden and for functions, giving visitors a choice between historic interiors and open-air spaces.
The property’s story reaches back to the former Tuggeranong Station and the Sweet Hills Estate. Richard Harris purchased land from Andrew Cunningham in the 1870s and built the cottages, which later became evidence of early construction methods and pioneer life in the Territory. After periods of decline and changing uses, formal restoration began in 1983. The buildings were preserved when Isabella Drive was planned, and the site was later classified by the National Trust of Australia and listed on the Register of the National Estate.
For groups, Rose Cottage offers two private function rooms. The Glasshouse seats 60 to 80 people, with space for more standing guests, while The Shed seats up to 100. Both include a private bar, bar attendant and private bathrooms. With family meals, children’s options, historic surroundings and dedicated event spaces, it suits casual gatherings, group celebrations and visitors looking to experience a distinctive piece of Canberra’s Tuggeranong history. Bookings and function enquiries can be made directly with the venue.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.3 from 570 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
